Birthday Wish # 2: No More Pit Bull Bans, More Pit Bull Education
Through out the U.S. there are breed specific bans on owning particular breeds of dogs. These are overwhelmingly aimed at pit bull types, but sometime include Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans and even Chow Chows (a breed owned by Martha Stewart for goodness sake!). Learn more at the Pit Bull Rescue Center.
Winnie's bestie and mentor is her big sister, Sharona (learn all about Sharona here and here) is a pit bull type dog (an American Staffordshire Terrier) and she has been subject to pit bull stereotyping but luckily she's never been personally banned anywhere. However, I stand with other responsible pit bull owners in fighting the discrimination of this amazing, loyal pet. Above all, I wish that pit bulls were seen as just another dog, they have gotten such a bad reputation that it's a deep hole for them to dig out of...but in the end all they are is a dog. They are not evil, they are not killers, they are not monsters. They are dogs. Dogs that have wet noses (just like a Golden Retriever or black Lab might), they are dogs that like chew toys, treats and sneaking onto the couch when they are not allowed. Winnie is a shih-tzu, which is a breed that will never be banned, but the truth is all the good behavior she's learned, she learned from a pit bull.
